Latino Special Services provides translation and interpretation services to families referred by the Illinois Dept of Children and Family Services. Cultural differences and living conditions often lead to situations that are complicated by language barriers. For example, while it may be permissible for an 8-year-old child to watch her 2-year-old sister while her parents are at work in their native country, an immigrant family may not understand that this is not allowed in the United States. Puentes works to reduce this barrier, and mitigate negative family situations. This program was recently supplemented by our Familias Mejorando (Families Improving) program which provides Spanish-language parenting instruction, and support.
