Puentes para la Paz, or Bridges to Peace, is a collaboration between Puentes de Esperanza and the Violence Prevention Center of Southwestern Illinois, an agency dedicated to eliminating domestic violence in individual lives and society as a whole. This project is designed to: · Empower Hispanic/Latino victims of domestic violence to overcome barriers to services · Educate the Latino community on the problem of domestic violence and the services available · Involve the Hispanic/Latino community in preventing domestic violence · Serve as liaisons for victims of domestic violence to ensure there is respect and understanding Why is this important? · 5.3 million women are abused each year · Domestic violence is the number one cause of injury to women · 75% of men that batter women also abuse children in the home Warning Signs of an Abusive Relationship Is Your Partner: · Constantly checking up on you, or questioning you about your friends or activities? · Putting you down, criticizing you, or humiliating you? · Acting jealous and claiming their behavior is a sign of love? · Controlling who you see and what you do? · Threatening to destroy your personal possessions? · Threatening to harm you, your children, or your pets?
