Teen REACH is an after-school program, created to improve the academic performance of the youth served by Puentes de Esperanza. Additionally, staff encourage youth to view college as a real possibility, and prepare them for success as leaders of their communities.
The program focuses on Hispanic/Latino youth, ages 11-17, who find themselves torn between the expectations of their parents and their peers. Additionally, the program is beneficial to the parents of the youth as well. Many are first-generation immigrants, who grew up in a world very different than the one facing their children. To better involve these parents in their children’s education, the Teen REACH program provides translation services for them when communicating with teachers and school administration.
Puentes de Esperanza kicked off Teen REACH in October of 2009. Program staff provide transportation for participants from their schools, to the program site, and to their homes at the end of the day.
Upon arriving, the teens have a snack, and begin their homework. Puentes staff provide them with homework assistance, including materials that may not be available to them at home, such as internet access and art supplies. Located at Immanuel UCC in East St. Louis, the Puentes office includes a large gym and kitchen, allowing for recreation as well as cooking lessons. Time is also given for socialization – the teens are given a chance to talk with positive adult figures and peers about issues that they may not feel comfortable discussing with a parent or teacher.
Additionally, the youth have participated in a wide variety of activities outside the Puentes office, including a personalized tour of the Holocaust museum in St. Louis, visiting cultural venues in the area, and receiving full access to the newly revamped Fairmont City Library.
