The Iniciativa de Salud para Mujeres, or Women’s Health Initiative, is funded by a grant from the Susan G. Komen for the Cure - St. Louis Affiliate. Many Latino women do not have a chance to learn much about breast health or physiology unless they begin breastfeeding their children or they develop a problem that demands medical attention. Becoming familiar with breast anatomy and physiology can help individuals understand the normal changes in their bodies that they experience throughout their lifetimes. This knowledge is also an important starting place for understanding health problems and diseases that affect the breasts. According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer and the leading cause of cancer death among Hispanic women who are most likely to be diagnosed with larger, later-stage tumors. Puentes de Esperanza’s Iniciativa de Salud para Mujeres seeks to reduce/eliminate these barriers through outreach efforts aimed at increasing breast cancer knowledge and awareness and by ensuring that screening, diagnosis, treatment and support services are available to all area Latinas.
